“Impressionistic Journeys”

The heart of our program this June is the evocative and luminous music of the French Impressionists Debussy and Ravel. Influenced by French painters and symbolist poets near the end of the 19th century, this music draws the listener into the intangible expressions of nature through musical impressions of the movements of the sea, of the clouds, of the shifting colors of light. Harmonies lose their strict functionality and are composed in such a way to evoke a dream-like flow of images. Dvorak, Piazzolla, and American composers Gershwin and Schickele may not be categorized as Impressionists and were not as focused on musical expressions of nature, but each in their unique way conveys impressions of the cultural fabric of the musical world around them through incorporation of Native American tunes, Negro Spirituals, Appalachian fiddle tunes, Jazz and Tango.
