Vienna in the 18th and 19th centuries, much like Istanbul, was a melting pot of nationalities, languages and musical traditions existing side by side. From the royal houses of Hapsburg, Esterhazy and Razumovsky to the city squares, cafes, dancing halls and middle-class family living rooms, visitors to Vienna often reported an astonishing amount of music being played. This rich cultural fabric provided the support and inspiration for generations of great composers and the medium of chamber music often offered a particularly intimate and personal means of expression for these composers. In this week’s program we have designed the Open Rehearsals and Jam Sessions in order to encourage a relaxed dialogue between listeners and performers reminiscent of the numerous salon events in Vienna and very familiar to Turkish audiences frequenting “Fasıllar”, “Aşık Atışmaları” or “Musiki Meşkleri”

For Saturday’s program we have chosen movements influenced by the exuberance of the Ländlers, ( Folk music of German speaking people from the “Land”) Waltzes and Gypsy music. Turkey’s premier string quartet, the Borusan Quartet will present the first half of the concert on Sunday with classics by Mozart and Kreisler and we will conclude with the quintessentially Viennese music of Schubert.

This program would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and generosity of the Mayor of Avanos, Dr. Mustafa Körükçü. We would like to express our gratitude to him
